Hidden Voices
2 dancers, 2 celli + electronics - 2017
I found this recording from a few years ago on my hard drive. Padilla is a Southern California based choreographer and activist who organized this collaboration. Inspired to empower the many voiceless victims of sexual assault, Padilla made the choice to use one of former president Donald Trump's speeches in the wake of supreme court justice Brett Kavanaugh's appointment. I decided to process the speech heavily bring out the negativity of the rhetoric. I also decided upon the instrumentation of cello duo for a few reasons: using the extremities of the same instrument's range to show the divide between those in support and those in opposition of the Me Too movement, using the same instrument to symbolize the fact that both states of mind are coming from the same species, and the physical intimacy that is required to play the instrument.
